The World After the Dark Advent

Prologue

In the year 2026, a cataclysm rocked the foundations of society.

It wasn't a meteor or a plague. There were no terrorists that are known of, nor was there any eye witnesses to what really and truly happened... at least none that have come forward.

All that is publicly known is that the event was focused initially in a mountain city nestled on the east coast of the United States known as Silvertop. It began a dark and ominous night when the clouds hid the moon away behind curtains of snow.

Strange phenomenon were seen all throughout the night; reports of people flying through the air, dark shadows that seemed to follow people around the streets, and horrible sounds that came from the darkened corners of peoples homes.

The incidents were isolated to the poorer side of town at first, and very little official action was taken. "It's just the thugs and brutes that prey on the upstanding citizens of the city trying to act tough," the politicians said, "We will double the police traffic in the area until this trend has subsided."

Sadly to say, the law of this town most often neglected to police the area at all and politicians saying they would doubling their complete lack of effort did little to make them begin doing so. In the end, the situation was left unhandled.

A few days later, the shadows and horrific noises started to 'move outside' of the slums, slowly at first, moving into the commercial district, then to the more upscale residential districts, and finally downtown to cover the entire city. Soon enough ghostly screams echoed down Main Street in the dead of the night and shadows crawled into the windows of houses to gift the residents with horrid nightmares.

Something was wrong in this little city, and at that point, no one could deny it. It had spread to several nearby cities at that point, like some infectious disease spreading across the highways and byways or America, and soon the world.

And then, people started to change.

Friends and neighbors (a full 10% of the worlds population) suddenly disappeared for hours or days, or sometimes even weeks, only to reappear as a completely different species. Garou, vampires, kitsune, giants, gnomes, angels, demons... creatures of legend suddenly became very real, even if they weren't as the tales typically tell.

Many people didn't notice that the shadows and dark voices suddenly vanished around this time til much, much later.

Still, the world was thrown into chaos as those that remained human began to shun and persecute those that had involuntarily changed in such an unacceptable way. The first mass murders happens mere hours after the first official case was ever found. And although most political or sociological grudges held between humans were forgotten that day, far worse beliefs were put in place for these new non-humans (or simply Nons).

In many countries, these people ceased to be people. In others, they were afforded only death, and not always a quick one. Other countries segregated the   populations, creating little reservations where they may or may not have any civil liberties.

Out of all of this, a veil was lifted. A hidden world revealed to an awakened audience. A world kept secret by countless secret organizations, such as the Free Masons and their bastard child the Illuminati, for millennia using forgotten arts and technologies.

This was a world where these creatures of legend and people with extraordinary powers had existed all along, where these creatures had been forced into hiding millennia ago by the ancient humans. Old technology and techniques began to surface, and the modern world was forever altered by it.

Technology leaped forward with the advent of people able to directly influence fundamental forces of reality. The ancient art of Artifice is slowly making a comeback, with modern devices capable of feats traditional technology would have found impossible.

It is now fifty years later, and the United States is fortunately not one of the previously mentioned countries, with non-humans and the soon to emerge enhanced or E-Human (AKA E's), having essentially the same rights as normal humans do... at least on the federal level.

The US Federal Government has dragged out any and all litigation affiliated with these newly classified citizens until the bills inevitably dies, so no meaningful laws have been passed to assure or take away any rights to non/E-humans. And the only cases involved with the topic that have ever made it to the supreme court involved whether or not these citizens are, well, citizens, calling their rights into question even though the cases ended somewhat positively for the Non/E-Humans.

This leaves the handling of these new citizens to the states, meaning that some states are rather open and friendly to non/E-humans while others are outright hostile even though they cannot (openly) do anything too drastic to people. Many states have politicians who are Nons or E-Humans, where other have segregated school and housing systems, leading to what many call Freak Schools and entire sections of city populated by Nons or E's, where the residents are forced to police themselves as normal police rarely attempt to enter the area.

That isn't to say the pitfalls are not given evenly among the Nons and E's. E's typically live much easier lives, mostly due to the fact that although they have superhuman capabilities they are still human.

Many E's are given special rights and privileges if they vow to police the Non and E populations so that the normal humans can "remain safely out of harms reach". There are rumors that a few Nons have also been given this opportunity, but most Nons would agree such a thing would be akin to selling ones soul to a evil corporate machine.

Rumors as of late say that the shadows and voices seem to be returning, and a call has gone out to those who have the capabilities to do something about it before another incident further destabilizes the world and leads it into utter darkness.

ABout

A modern sci-fi/fantasy story with themes of surrealism and eldritch horror, set within the same universe as Ryft, Dark Advent is the story of a few individuals trying to survive on Earth in the year 2076 c.e. and hopefully find their place within it in the process; be that as heroes, villains, or bystanders.  Based heavily off of real-world history and mythology, current events, and popular culture; things in the World After the Dark Advent are rarely as they are commonly thought to be.

Tensions between different races are high, and secret societies ply their trades behind closed doors, with spray paint in urban cities, and with guns upon the vast fields of war.  The Free Masons strive to keep the secrets of the universe from the common people at the same time as they are the main purveyors of the all new Artifice Technology, while the Illuminati strive to use those secrets and technologies for personal gain.  Gaia's Legion works to protect the world from the strife of men and are often labeled terrorists for their efforts, while the Caretakers fight and bleed to protect it from the madness that lurks in the dark... and oh so often die in obscurity, never recognized for their sacrifice.

Ancient beings meddle in the affairs of mortals, dark creatures roam the streets at night, and heroes strive to protect the world they belong to from the horrors of the unknown, even as the very people they're trying to protect are trying to destroy them.  And as the mysteries of the universe are revealed, the true horrors that the fabric of reality hold at bay are released unto mankind.  And one question holds firm in the minds of countless people around the world.
